Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the first time you read a book and felt like the author was telling YOUR story? My school is full of books, but the characters don't look like, or have the same traditions as many of our students. They need multicultural books they can connect to and that can show them new worlds.

My students are creative and intelligent second graders.

We are a Race to the Top school, which means we are focusing on raising the achievement at our 96% free and reduced lunch school. About 50% of our students are Limited English Proficient, so multicultural literature is a must! We are working hard to win the Race to the Top every day!

My Project

I will be able to use these books for read alouds, and to send home with students for extra reading practice. During the read alouds, I can model reading strategies, such as making connections, or activating prior knowledge, that the students will only be able to grasp using stories THEY can connect with. These are all books that include either multicultural characters, or are stories passed down in many different cultures. These books will also enrich the students understanding of students and cultures that are different from them.

Most of the students at this school are below grade level in reading.

I KNOW that they can catch up and excel if only they have the right mix of books to fall in love with. These books will help us work together to close that achievement gap and build a better future for our children.
