This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This will be my ninth year as a classroom teacher! I have spent the past almost-decade in grades K-2, and am happily settled with my favorite age group – first graders. I am passionate about teaching these 6- and 7-year-olds who are so intelligent, curious, and full of possibility.
During the pandemic I have been teaching on Zoom and making videos.
The students love seeing physical materials to bring their learning to life.
My Project
When the school year begins, whether we are in person or over Zoom, we will start small group reading instruction. To me, this is the most important part of our academic time together. At the beginning of the year, I will be getting to know my new set of first-graders as people and readers.
With these tubs, we can use physical objects to begin our discussion of initial sounds through play and conversation.
For example, in the "R" tub there is a tiny plastic rainbow, a small rose, and more! We can then play games, sort them, and create stories about them as students demonstrate understanding of the sounds.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
