My Students

Do you remember your first day of school?? Were you frightened? Did you feel unsure about yourself? For many of my Kindergartners this is exactly what they are experiencing as they are exposed to an academic setting for the first time.

I am privileged to teach 21 kindergarten students.

My students attend a large public school and come from low income households. All the students at the school receive free lunch and also qualify for free after school programs. Most of my students are learning English as a second language and are attending school for the first time. They are frightened and have little self confidence when they arrive...but I make sure that this transition has the least possible stress for them!! My students are eager to learn but need creative ways to break the barriers of their inexperience!! I try to create independent students who have the confidence to be the leaders of their own learning!! One way I do this is by giving all students a job in our class...Classroom Managers.

My Project

We were fortunate to have a camera, but recently it was damaged and is no longer working therefore I am asking for donors to help us out once again!!! I intend to use the camera to take pictures of: all my students to label their cubbies and pocket chart pockets, classroom areas/items to create a print rich environment, and activities through out the year for our end of the year slide show. Many of my students cannot recognize their names (or their classmates) so when I ask them to find their cubbies to put papers away or get homework folders to go home...they freeze!!! They become scared and insecure because they can't read, but by having a picture next to the name, they easily find what they are being asked to find. They build self-confidence and become leaders of their earn learning by eventually figuring out that these labels also helps them in writing letters to friends and labeling their own stories in their writing journals.

Ultimately my goal is provide my students with a safe and warm learning environment...I do this by creating a print rich environment that is conducive to their developmental learning stages.

Having everything labeled allows them, even as 5 years-olds, to become self-sufficient and leaders of their own learning. They fear of not being able to read or recognize letters slowly goes away as they learn that there are many tools (i.e. pictures and labels) around the classroom to help them!
