My Students
This is my forth year implementing the Virginia Preschool Initiative for children ages 4-5 at a Title I school. Acceptance into the program is based on specific eligibility criteria and determined risk factors. My goal is to provide a safe, welcoming environment where students are given the opportunity to achieve social, emotional, and academic success in a full day setting. Our classroom is child-centered and inquiry-based; it is naturalistic and evolving. Our students are explorers who benefit from hands-on learning and thrive having the freedom of choice.
My Project
My students need a private area in our classroom where they can relax in a space made just for them! Four and five year olds can become overwhelmed with emotions and take comfort in a safe place where they can be alone but not isolated. We want to satisfy individual needs within our classroom community. This space is perfect for cozying up with a book and a favorite stuffed animal. The Cube allows a student to take self-time when needed but also provides a connection to what is happening in the room and promotes a fluid transition back into the group when the child feels ready.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
