This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Sharpening pencils is loud and disruptive during instruction and quiet work times. A quiet sharpener would allow my kids to quickly and quietly sharpen pencils and allow other students to stay focused. More active kids can get up (release energy) to sharpen more often b/c it won't interrupt others.
School hasn't started yet this year so I can't be specific about my students.
However, this upcoming school year will be my 10th year at my school and I can share a little about it. It is a charter school with more than 90% receiving free/reduced-cost lunch. In addition to strong academic goals, my school focuses on character eduction with strong programs in place, most notably our anti-bullying and community service programs. The support staff at the school is outstanding! They all go above and beyond their job descriptions to keep kids safe and learning at all times. I work at a great school with the most wonderful students.
My Project
I believe having this quiet, quality sharpener in my class will help my kids stay focused on instruction. I would like kids to take responsibility for sharpening their own pencils and, for that, I need a sturdy sharpener. This Stanley Bostitch sharpener is made by a power tool company. Additionally, this model is designed to accommodate colored pencils which can be especially hard on sharpeners. This ensures the sharpener will stand up to student use.
The second, and more important, reason is student focus. Pencil sharpening can be a distraction. My school building is over 100 years old with cement walls. When kids use a standard sharpener, the sound is so loud kids can't help to be distracted. This reminds students who look to be distracted to use pencil sharpening as a reason to stop work. Plastic hand-held sharpeners break easily and distract. Lastly, having a sharpener the kids can use takes the chore from me which allows me to spend time on more instruction and the kids.
I have purchased several electric sharpeners in the past manufactured by office supply companies.
Some worked better than others but none of them were quiet enough to be used while students were at work in the classroom. This really limited student use of sharpeners and some kids just didn't have access to a sharpener outside of the classroom.
Dry Erase Markers: Students put worksheets in page protectors then, use the dry erase markers to complete work without fear of mistakes. Students LOVE it!
