Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I serve Gifted and Talented students in a highly diverse, low-income district. The students come from many different backgrounds and a majority of our students speak a second language. Our students come from supportive families who want the best for their kids but often do not have the resources they need to assist them. These students are focused and excited to learn.

Gifted students are tomorrow's leaders, inventors, problem-solvers and creators!

Providing them with opportunities to think critically and collaborate is essential for their success while providing them more opportunities to be more college and career ready!

My Project

My classroom has a hydroponic garden. Throughout the year students have engaged in lessons regarding water conservation, sustainability, pollination, vectors, light wavelengths, etc. Now that my students are unable to come to school, I would like to provide them with at-home learning opportunities. Students will be given a package of wool starters (that I already have) and these lettuce seeds to start their own coke bottle projects at home. Students will design their garden out of leftover 2L bottles, fill them with soil, and add the wool starter and seeds. Students will check in with me on Instagram and over ZOOM meetings to discuss their projects along with what they are learning and having to problem solve through.

Not only will this project provide academic enrichment for my students, but it will give them a purpose for continually touching base with me on one of my platforms.

My student's safety is my number one concern and this avenue will allow me to continue instructing, but also make more contacts with my students to check in on their well-being. The addition of lettuce gardens also serves their families with nutrient-rich side salad options in a time when several families are out of work.
