I teach High School math at a public college preparatory school that provides students throughout the city with an opportunity to enroll in a rigorous curriculum that prepares them for post-secondary careers. All students, regardless of their socioeconomic status or neighborhood zoning, have a chance to receive a quality education filled with spirit and tradition.
The most challenging part of working with such intelligent students is that they must constantly be engaged. Currently, most do not have the attention span to read books, solve lengthy problems, or listen to teachers for more than the length of a song on an iPod. I spend hours daily creating math lessons and projects that keep them engaged and entertained. I do not, however, want to give into their short attention spans. I want to do more so that my students are not only engaged, but involved in my lessons as well.
Since my school has nearly 5000 students, however, the resources available are very limited. I do not even have my own classroom, so each period, I carry my own personal laptop, a projector, 3 wireless tablets, and an Elmo Document Camera on a cart between four different rooms. I have been fortunate enough to receive funding through DonorsChoose for the tablets and document camera, but everything else comes out of my own pocket.
One of the classrooms that I am in does not have a projector screen, so my options are to either teach those classes with only a chalkboard or to find some way to provide the students with a projector screen. As a teacher, I have always striven to provide ALL of my students with every opportunity in order to become successful in college, so downgrading their lessons is not an option. I want to make sure that each and every one of my students is prepared for the college environment, and this includes providing them with the resources and technology that they will be exposed to.
With a projector screen, students will be able to see the multiple representations of the math problems I present. They will constantly be engaged as I provide examples and interactive demonstrations of the mathematical concepts. They will be able to see the work of their peers through the document camera, and discuss the processes and possible mistakes that were made. But to fully utilize the presentation tools in the classroom, I need something to present it on!
I’d like one Draper Salara projector screen so that I can present my lessons. This specific model is large enough so that all the students in the classroom will be able to see the material, and if I am switched into a different room, the screen can easily be moved without any difficult wiring. The combination of this screen and the materials I currently use in my classroom will allow my students to think more critically, learn independently, and effectively communicate with their peers.
By donating to this project, you will not only be playing an important role in my students’ lives, but also providing them with an opportunity to take an active role in their own education. With your support, we can ensure that our future teachers, doctors, lawyers, CEOs, and maybe even president, were given every opportunity to become the best versions of whoever they are meant to be.
