Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? My students have not yet discovered books that capture their imaginations, but they also have not yet had access to quality children's literature.
Some of my first graders are just beginning to read.
Some of my first graders are emerging readers. And some of my first graders are reading way above grade level. They come from backgrounds as diverse as their reading abilities. Some live below the poverty level for our community, and some live lives of extreme comfort. Regardless of their backgrounds and reading abilities, they all deserve access to quality reading materials at school. In addition, the less fortunate of my students deserve access to small group guided reading books that they can borrow to carry home and read to their parents.
My Project
These students need to have access to quality children's literature that is leveled appropriately. I have been teaching for 6 years in the same school district, and the last time that district purchased leveled readers for small group guided reading was before my first year there. Over time, the books that were last purchased have fallen apart and been lost. MANY books are missing, making it almost impossible to teach a small group of 4-5 students. Small groups are ideal for teaching reading because these groups provide an intimate setting for comprehension discussions and differentiated word work. I am requesting sets of classic children's literature for my classroom. These books are classics for a reason. They inspire and engage readers, encouraging life-long learning. My classroom has an immediate and desperate need for these books!
This project is necessary because of its ability to inspire readers, reach the diverse needs of learners, and be used year after year.
Finally, because these books can be borrowed and taken home, this project will encourage students to read with their parents, which is one of the most important aspects of student success.
