This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a teacher in a low-income school, I work with students who are faced with many economic and emotional challenges both in and out of the classroom. My campus is a Title I school where the majority of the students are considered at risk. My class consists of bilingual students that are learning to speak, read and write English and Spanish. Although many of my students struggle with the English language they come to school every day eager to learn. Despite their challenges, they work hard to achieve academic success!
My Project
Every year I received a group of 25 or more bilingual students who come to me with a variety of reading levels. Some students have never read a book in English while others are reading at grade level, finding a quality reading assessment has always been a challenge. Currently, our school lacks a reading assessment kit to test our students. I have found a great tool for assessing their reading abilities. With this assessment kit (Foutas & Pinnell Literacy ) I will be able to assess & target their instruction.
As more and more schools continue to focus on having students reading on grade level by 3rd grade, the need for a quality assessment tool has become of great importance.
Irene C. Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell have developed a reading level assessment that is based upon research and written to assess specific skills. This award-winning system will help me, drive, assess, and target instruction for my students.
