My Students
"While there is perhaps a province in which the photograph can tell us nothing more than what we see with our own eyes, there is another in which it proves to us how little our eyes permit us to see."
Dorothea Lange
I am a special educator at a small K-8 school of just under 100 students in a rural community marked by the absence of economic growth, and consequently, socioeconomic prosperity.
Our school is one of the pillars of this small community. We offer so many enriching activities for our students, who may not otherwise be able to access these experiences. We are comprised of a staff who hold a "kids first" mentality, and the students have flourished with the plethora of activities that many dedicated adults have contributed towards making a reality: hikes, after school programs, healthy food programs, educational camps, etc. If there is a way that we can think to help the kids to become well-rounded and motivated members of a community, we make it a goal and strive towards it with a passion for the well-being of our students.
My Project
With student-created memory books that contain a year's worth of experiences, the kids at our school will be able to look back for years to come and remember what it means to be a part of a group of people who look out for each other and operate as a team. They will see their own smiling faces repelling off of a rock wall, their friends skiing down a local mountainside, and they will hopefully see value in both their community and themselves.
With the 20/20 vision that comes with time past, our students will be able to look back on their 2015/2016 school year and see, in vivid print, their community in action.
These books could be a puzzle piece that portrays a small bit of our future leaders and stewards of our environment. These books will be the physical documentation of what has been a fantastic year.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
