Quality Literature

My students need a variety of picture and leveled-reader books to read with partners and independently. A variety of fiction and non-fiction would also be beneficial.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

All of my 24 second grade students are English Language Learners. They range from monolingual Spanish speakers to proficient English speakers. Besides our school library, many of them do not have access to quality literature.

I teach in a low socio-economic suburb of Arizona.

The majority of my class and school receive free breakfast and lunch daily. Several of my second graders take home weekly food bags to help ensure they have healthy food for the weekends. My students enjoy learning; especially anything hands-on. They like to read with partners or with the teachers and they love to take AR reading tests to earn points to spend at our library AR store.

My Project

Many of the books in my classroom library were bought by me over the past 15 years. The majority of them are old, have torn pages, and broken spines. It would be great to have some newer books for my students to read and enjoy. We have time every day during our reading block to read alone and with partners. I know my students would enjoy having a variety fiction and non-fiction books to read. They would also be able to take more AR tests that they could earn points from. They are able to spend their AR points at our library AR store each quarter.

These books will help to increase engagement during our reading block.

My students love our independent and partner reading time. I know they would enjoy some new books to read with their buddies, especially the non-fiction texts. Any new books will also help to increase their comprehension, which in turn, will help increase their English acquisition.
