Quality Lab Reports = First Time College Students!
My students need books such as the Merck Index (for looking up chemicals) ACS Style Guide (for proper citations) and Successful Lab Reports to aid them in writing good quality lab reports and to prepare them for college.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a 5th year Chemistry teacher in one of the largest and most challenging school districts in the country. My students come from a high need and high poverty area where just getting to high school is an achievement. However, I am pushing them for more. I am working with a fantastic group of Latino and African American American students who inspire me everyday with their perseverance and resiliency. My vision and dream for my students is that they all have the opportunity to attend college and pursue a career in whatever makes them happy.
Most of my students will be the first in their families to attend college. I am helping them with this journey. However, many of them are still developing the skills to be successful. They need help visualizing difficult subject matter like chemistry, practice with hard math problems, and skills for studying. We are working on developing these skills everyday. But because most of my students are English Language Learners, they are still struggling with writing quality lab reports. They cannot format correctly, write the names of chemicals properly, or write effective conclusions from they findings in the lab.
Students in my classroom complete lab activities each and every week. For complete labs, I always require standard lab report write-ups. The Merck Index is a Chemist's encyclopedia and would aid my students in looking up names and properties of the materials they are investigating. The ACS Guide would act as a resource when students are citing references and I am teaching them how to not plagiarize (which my students struggle with because they don't know any better and no one has ever taught them- until my class!)The lab report reference books would allow me to support all my students in their writing. Our school is focusing on improving literacy, and I know of no better way then to help my students write effective lab reports. These students would use these books in and out of the lab every week and would be able to borrow them as assistance when working on their reports at home or in the library.
Anyone out there who is a scientist knows how valuable a skill writing effective lab reports is for my students. There is such a demand for the upcoming youth to go into STEM careers, and I am doing everything I can to lay a foundation for my students' success with writing scientifically.
Donors Choose is a wonderful program that has helped so many classrooms obtain materials that truly make a difference in the daily lives of students. Whether you are considering a first time donation or you've been here before, you really make a difference and have a major impact on teachers, students and learning. I thank you so much for considering my proposal and know that the materials with be loved and appreciated by many students for years to come.
