My Students

These drumline students are some of the most excited and motivated students at our school. The amount of time, dedication, and practice it takes to play this music well is intense, but they dig in and create awesome performances every time.

These students are an incredibly diverse group, coming from inner city Hartford, the suburbs, and everything in between for the chance to take college classes in high school.

They come to this school specifically because of it's integration with a college. Along with that academic drive comes a ton of talent. Our music ensembles are full of extremely gifted musicians, and this drumline is one of the core music groups. These drummers are the backbone of the music department, and the heart beat for this school!

My Project

The music program here is very new, but growing fast. It started a few years ago as a drumset and a couple of guitar amps, and that's pretty much it. We were granted music to buy some beautiful marching drums, which have served as the backbone for the instrumental side of our music department. Unfortunately, the city of Hartford has now found itself in a tremendous budget crunch, and the lack of money filters down to the schools as well. As such, buying new equipment and replacement parts is incredibly difficult. This is particularly a problem with drum heads.

By their nature drums are instruments that you're constantly beating on, and the three-year-old-low-quality drum heads that they came with will be totally unusable by the end of the year.

Real High quality heads are generally designed to last for a 3 or 4 month marching season before being replaced. The heads we're using have been played all-year-round for almost 3 years and, frankly, weren't very good to start with because they were the junk that came with the drums. Several have already broken, which I've had to replace out of pocket just to keep the kids playing.

We've been able to build up other aspects of the program through instrument donations and used equipment. This isn't an option for drumheads. We desperately need to outfit the entire drumline with new heads just to keep the ensemble up and running, but they're expensive!! This donor request is to do just that, while also buying a few spares to have on hand for when some inevitably break. These heads will hopefully last us 3-4 years, and probably help hundreds of students over that time.
