My students need a Quadcopter and GoPro camera to strengthen our technology education offerings and stimulate student interest in current technology.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Minich's classroom raised $837

My Students
The pace of technological change is incredible. Students are saturated with new consumer electronics at stores and YouTube videos of cool gadgets and techniques. They are also stimulated by news articles of military and commercial applications of robots, drones, and other 21st C technologies.
Our school is full of students motivated to solve problems and troubleshoot technology.
It is a natural instinct for most of them. Students in all of our grades from 7th to 12th often help teachers with computer and Smartboard problems. Next year, we will be making a big leap by going to a 1-1 program in which students will be entrusted with laptops. The expectations are high and there will no doubt be challenges. But the students and teachers are ready and real world applications such as the ability to work with quadcopter drones and shoot and edit video will be very well received!
My Project
Junior high students are required to take technology education courses and, while the teachers do their best with what they have, some of the projects are a bit dated. A quadcopter will immediately stimulate these younger students to learn engineering, embedded systems, micro-controllers, programming, and robotics. Connecting technology with the real, outside world while learning the basics of flight dynamics will open young minds to exciting career possibilities.
Older students will have an opportunity to study control systems, signal processing, and the science behind types of sensors. Overall, we will be more attentive to how drones are starting to be used in commercial applications such as survey work, livestock monitoring, and even security issues.
As students experience the thrill of flying a quadcopter around our campus and editing the footage, there will no doubt be conversations with parents and the public that broaden everyone's perspective about a technology that so far has gotten unfavorable press with the use of drones in war.
I am sure that a number of students will be encouraged to purchase their own quadcopters and our hope is that some students will gain confidence to build their own quadcopters from kits that are for sale.
