My Students

As a middle school technology teacher I work with a variety of students in grades 6-8. My school is located in a district which is just outside a major city and the 900+ students come from very diverse backgrounds. Since my classes are considered Exploratory classes students don't typically have much choice about taking the class. My middle school students are eager to learn when things are interesting to them and when they have control over how they learn.

In my 20+ years of teaching both in Special Education and now in Technology, I see students who are only concerned with the end product and not with the learning of how they got there.

I celebrate ‘failure’ in my room as long as the student has learned something from it. My goal is to guide students to a place where they are able to be successful in this 21st century world because they push themselves to think critically, creatively problem solve, and communicate with peers.

My Project

This professional development program will help me to bring text-based coding using physical devices to my classes. Learning the Python coding language and having a set of Micro:bits to use in class would appeal to so many students of different abilities. Computer Science is one of the fastest growing fields and there is expected to be a shortfall of qualified programmers over the next ten years. All students should have the opportunity to try Computer Science in a meaningful way before they graduate high school.

This curriculum will help students to understand that computer science is not just coding on a screen but it is about solving problems!

When learning to code, many programs allow students to see on the screen what their code does but this curriculum allows them to see the code actually work on a device. Now imagine being able to extend those skills to be able to make something that would help a person. With this curriculum, students will not only learn the Python coding language but then they will also be able to invent some very cool things using the Micro:bits.
