Puzzling Puzzles Encourage Thinking Skills

My students need a variety of puzzles to encourage their critical thinking, sharing, motor and problem solving skills.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Liss's classroom raised $274

This project is fully funded

I have one of the best jobs in the world! On a daily basis I work with a wonderful team of people to provide a Pre-K curriculum to 40 students! Our classroom is in a large urban school district and we serve children from a variety of backgrounds with many different needs. We teach two sessions daily. Over the summer, my co-teacher and I spent 3 weeks going through our room, getting it ready for the school year. We realized that many of the puzzles that are in our classroom are older than the parents of the children we teach, they have outdated pictures, are peeling and missing pieces! It is time for some new puzzles and FAST! I am requesting several different types of puzzles because different puzzles serve children with different needs and teach different skills. The most basic puzzles are simple ones, which are not connected and where the pieces go is clearly defined. The pieces are also slightly raised which makes it easier to put in and take out the different pieces. These puzzles are used for our youngest three-year-olds and those students with special needs. It is fun to see the excitement and "I DID IT ALL BY MYSELF" looks on their faces. They don't even know that they are working on their logical thinking, spatial relationship and fine motor skills. The next puzzles we give to our children are the Jigsaw puzzles. These puzzles force the children to use all of the skills listed above plus the added skill of problem solving as they try to piece the puzzles together to put 8 - 10 pieces back in a wooden frame. Lastly, I am requesting larger floor Jigsaw puzzles. These puzzles encourage students to work together which forces them to apply all the skills listed above plus cooperation skills. Cooperation skills and small group skills are very important in the preschool years as children learn to work together in order to achieve a common goal. Our classroom is in desperate need of new puzzles that are appealing to the children to enhance their learning skills! Please help us!
