Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Puzzles have been enjoyed for centuries by enthusiasts of all ages. Considered a simple, classic pastime, they are packed with learning opportunities that span the curriculum. While stimulating the mind, they also provide relaxation. Paper pockets will facilitate student access and organization.
I have 2 classes of 18 4-year-old's motivated to learn about everything!
They are enrolled in the School Readiness Language Development Program (SRLDP). Primarily English language learners who qualify for free lunch, the goal of this program, unique to LAUSD, is language development. Students receive instruction in their primary language, Spanish, as well as English language development.
My Project
The Trend Fun-To-Know Puzzles will provide practice and reinforcement of early learning concepts including colors, shapes, opposites, and animals. The alphabet puzzles will promote letter recognition and phonemic awareness. Puzzles also foster sensory perception, hand-eye coordination, spatial reasoning, and fine motor skills such as grasping/manipulating. In addition, puzzles require problem-solving, critical thinking, and organization.
Our classroom includes 2-4 adult-directed centers and 18 student-selected centers each day. The paper pockets will be key in the implementation of a system to direct and organize students' access to these centers.
Whether the wooden big knob or the cardboard jigsaw variety, puzzles offer an array of opportunities to learn and enjoy.
One can work alone, with a partner, or a couple of friends. Working through a puzzle requires coordinating cognitive, visual, social, fine motor and oral language skills. If puzzles were food, they'd be called a complete meal. With so much going on, my students need a system to navigate the classroom. Paper pockets will facilitate the implementation of this system.
