My Students
A typical day in my classroom is very schedule oriented. When working with students who have autism, it is very important to be consistent. We use individual picture schedules for each student. This schedule tells them where they need to be during each part of the day.
For many of my students, this is their first experience with attending school.
They like having a clear and easy to follow schedule that consists of a lot of repetition. They rotate between centers that consist of individual work stations, one-on-one work stations, sensory play, and free play to work on socialization skills. Most of my students are nonverbal, which makes it difficult for them to communicate their wants and needs. This also plays a large role their receptive language and understanding what is being asked of them. Rotating through the same centers with similar work each day helps each student better understand the material and become familiar with daily routines.
My Project
During center rotations, each student is required to complete at least one individual work station each day. These stations consist of a student completing a puzzle, a folder task, and a box task. The materials are changed out each week, but as the students grow throughout the year, the tasks become easier and easier to complete. For this reason, we have three levels of individual work stations: easy, medium, and hard. With the minimal amount of puzzles that we currently have in the classroom, each student is breezing through their work and not continuing to build on what they have already learned.
These puzzles will help each of my students better understand matching concepts, counting, and labels of everyday objects.
It will also help when reviewing unit specific vocabulary. My students will also enjoy the task of learning how to put a new puzzle together and keep them engaged in their school work.
