My students need an external hard drive and items that they can relate to real life experiences. Puzzles and assembly projects allow them to follow directions and "make" things.

My Students
This is a separate school that serves students ages 3 to 21 with severe intellectual disabilities. Many of these students have concurrent challenges such as autism, blindness, deafness, or physical disabilities. Families find it difficult to take the children out into the community once they have returned home from school due to the transportation of wheelchairs and behaviors. Our focus is to provide opportunities for students to explore and develop independent functioning by addressing students’ individual needs. Through home, school and community involvement, we create an educational environment to maximize student success. Being the Daily Living teacher, I am fortunate to see all 144 students each week. Many students require hand over hand assistance to complete an activity and most are non-verbal.
My Project
My project request covers several aspects of my classroom. We need new hand towels to replace our old stained hand towels for when we are practicing dishwashing skills.
Our students spend a lot of time developing functional skills that they can carry over while at home and out in the community.
Skills include food preparation, following directions, identifying objects, communication, and social skills. We modify and adapt activities to make situations as "real-life" as possible. The tool and logic puzzles will help reinforce tool activities that we already have in the class. The cutting items and can opener will allow the kids to participate in an activity that they see during our cooking time but may not be able to do due to safety reasons.
Finally, we need the external hard drive to save pictures, documents, and lessons that we can modify and use from year to year. Many times in the past our outdated laptops have been known to "crash" and we lose everything. Hopefully, having things backed up on the drive will eliminate that stress.
