This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are wonderful scholars. They are enthusiastic future world changers who need your helping hand. While they may live in a community with challenges, they strive to improve themselves through hard work and optimistic outlooks. The school community is a diverse neighborhood in Philadelphia with wonderful families. Sadly, the area as been hit by opioid addiction and economic hardship. Many of my students rely on our school for both warm meals and a safe place to simply be a child. I want our classroom to go from a drab square to a warm, welcoming safe place overflowing with educational opportunity.
My Project
We are asking for puzzles to help my students learn cognitive and fine motor skills. I have choosen multiple different puzzles such as color puzzles to help them work cognitively, but also to be able to recognize their colors. There are many different magnetic puzzles so students can learn the fine motor skills needed to develop handwriting skills all while actively engaging in a fun task. There are so many learning opportunities within completing a puzzle.
Puzzles strengthen the connections between brain cells, and create new connections for improved cognitive speed.
Jigsaw puzzles are especially good for short-term memory because students will have to remember colours, shapes, and the big picture, all while determining which pieces fit together. Each puzzle is made of material that is easily cleanable per Covid guidelines. I felt that we needed old fashioned puzzles to help with our fine motor skills, to help with our problem solving skills and to get away from the constant use of technology.
