Puzzle Center for Problem Solving

My students need a puzzle center with puzzles ranging in difficulty to support their problem solving and reasoning skills as they progress.

My Students

For my students, problem solving, reasoning and critical thinking are things we work on daily. In order to support their learning, we need puzzles of all different difficulty levels. My students might be in the same grade, but they have very individual needs.

I teach a first grade 6:1:1 class for students with severe autism.

Our school is completely dedicated to teaching students with autism and will be starting its second year in September 2011. All of my students are about six years old and vary from being completely nonverbal to using one and two word phrases. We have a diverse classroom, including some English Language Learners. My six students each have their own powerful personality and have made great strides since they started in our school last year.

My Project

A puzzle center is essential for my students. This will build their critical thinking, problem solving, and reasoning skills and will help them to become confident in completing activities independently. In addition, a puzzle center will allow the students to work together to complete activities, which provides opportunities for eye contact, sharing, and communication. All of these are things that my students have difficulty with constantly. This center would provide fun, interesting and novel activities to motivate my students.

For my six students, communication is their biggest obstacle.

Puzzles used in a one-to-one setting facilitate communication between student and instructor. When students work together to complete puzzles, they have opportunities to communicate with each other. This puzzle center would be essential for my students in many ways.
