My Students
I have been privileged to work with a very special group of students, ranging from Pre-K through 4th grade, at multiple sites in low-income areas. Many of my preschool students and some of my elementary-age students are also dual language learners, growing up in households where parents speak primarily Spanish, but attending schools where their peers and teachers speak primarily English.
My students attend a Head Start and a Title I public school in a large urban area.
Despite the disadvantages they face, my students come to school, and to my speech room, every day eager to learn. We use many different activities to improve their articulation and language skills, including books, games, and songs. An iPad will bring yet another way to teach them, while engaging them with the technology that is so much a part of life in the 21st century.
My Project
My students come to me with a variety of needs - some are highly unintelligible, some need help with various aspects of language, some are bilingual learners, some are on the Autism Spectrum, and some are developmentally delayed. Using this iPad with a protective case to address their varied needs will allow me to target specific skills in a way that will engage every student at their own level.
There are Speech applications for iPad that target concepts, problem solving, speech sounds, grammar, and literacy with a multi-sensory approach.
The speech apps available for iPad use bright colors and vivid illustrations, animation, music, and other fun sounds and movement to keep kids engaged and focused on learning, and to reward them when they are successful.
Of course, technology cannot replace human interaction, and the iPad will be used as just one part of a student's individualized plan for intervention, to enhance their learning experience.
