My Students

My students attend a public elementary school on the west side of Chicago where 100% of our students come from low income households. All my students are excited about learning, from the moment they walk in the door, until the moment they put their homework in their backpack in the afternoon.

Using hands on materials and having variety in lessons definitely helps keep them engaged.

We utilize computer programs, videos, journaling and class discussions, in addition to our textbook and practice.

My Project

In a class of 30 students, you will always find a variety of learning styles and skill levels. My students are no different. While one student may still be struggling with a skill, another may have mastered it in 2nd grade.

A variety of students, means we need variety of choices.

When students have mastered a skill, but the majority of the class still needs to work on it, the smaller group of students need independent work that still pushes their limits.

In the same vein, some students might need extra resources to help them visualize or learn a concept in a new way. With independent task cards and hands on materials, these supplies will be able to help students on both end of the spectrum.

The math manipulative sets will help students who need the extra support of visual, hands on materials, while the student activity cards can help students stretch their mastery and get extra independent practice. Student dictionaries will help students take responsibility for their own spelling habits and help them work independently.

In addition to these materials to aid in independent learning, I have also included writing lesson books and a set of microscopes. The writing books will help us push our writing further and begin working toward writing narratives, poetry and opinion pieces. The microscopes will help us explore our world by getting a closer look at plants and insects. This has been a big area of interest for our class this year.
