Putting Practice into Action: Cooking for the Family
My students need a grocery store gift card to create recipes for their family to evaluate them on as a part of our cooking unit.

My Students
Somewhere deep in the heart of the Midwest lies our town. It is the quintessential rural town that has always been described in books, television, and movies since the beginning of time. Families have lived here for generations and take pride in everything that the small town has to offer. The townspeople come out in force at the annual Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast, as well as the Strawberry Festival. They crowd the stands to see their hometown team play ball and line the streets during the annual homecoming parade. It is, indeed, a tiny piece of Midwestern paradise.
Our high school special education classroom is a place of growth in academics, personality, and citizenship.
We celebrate each other's successes while learning from each other's mistakes; in short, we try our best and come together as one team with the common goal of becoming productive citizens in a global society.
My students don't let their disabilities define who they are or what they are capable of; instead, they embrace them and the challenges they pose without fear.
My Project
Every high school special education student has a transition plan. This plan goes over how students will survive once they have graduated from high school. One very important aspect of this transition plan is independent living skills and how the students can practice the skills needed to be successful in it. I want to be sure that my students are able to survive on their own, and one important skill they need to learn is how to prepare food that is not precooked.
My students have practiced cooking in the classroom; now it’s time for their families to evaluate them on their skills!
I will begin a small cooking unit with my students in January. The goal is to have them learn and prepare 3 breakfast recipes and 3 dinner recipes together as a class.
However, I also want to involve their families in the process, as food brings families together. Students will randomly draw one of the six recipes created in class and as homework, be required to prepare it for their families. I will use the HyVee Grocery Store gift card to then go purchase the ingredients needed for each student’s recipe. The students’ families will take pictures/videos of them preparing the meal and then evaluate their teen’s performance. The students will then come back to school and create a multimedia project to present to their peers.
