My Students
My school is full of diversity and success! We have scholars, artists, athletes, scientists, and innovators. The school is special because each student is able to find a place to make their own personal mark on the world. Our mission statement is "Making all students college and career ready, one Wildcat at a time."
Young adult literature is exploding with diversity these days and my students are reading like crazy!
With authors such as Angie Thomas and Jason Reynolds, there are so many options for important urban literature that is causing students to examine themselves and the world around them. Because of this burst, my students are devouring books!
This resurgence of young adult literature is creating a renaissance of the school library. When students and staff coming in for reading, they are also realizing the library is the perfect place to work and meet. I need to make my library a welcome environment that encourages these many uses.
My Project
My school has a Teaching and Learning pathway, which is a course of study for students considering the teaching profession. I am collaborating with their instructor on a literacy unit.
The students will read many current and culturally relevant picture books that cover topics such race, culture, gender stereotypes, and differing abilities.
Literacy is the key to making students successful in all aspects of their lives.
These books were chosen because they are award winners or are from authors or illustrators who are the leaders of their field. After reading the books, the student will come up with a book talk to record as well as a lesson that they can teach to the elementary school students they will be mentoring.
