My Students
We need to make science exciting and interesting for students. What better way than to have them design and build their own lab equipment then carry out the lab investigation?
The students in my class come from an inner city environment.
Many of them have never learned how to design and build lab equipment. The most important thing is making science fun and interesting. The inquiry-based science education is the best way to keep students interested in science.
My Project
The new NGSS standards have an engineering component built into the science standards. Students will be able to design their experiment, design lab equipment using 3D design software then build the equipment using the 3D printers. This will give the students access to real world applications.
How great would it be for students not only design their own investigation but also design and build their own lab equipment?
If students are interested in investigating gear ratios, for example, they could design the gears and a holder to test their theories. The types of investigations students could do are enormous since they could build the equipment needed for their investigation.
