Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our school sits in a poverty infested urban neighborhood. One hundred percent of our students are entitled to free lunch due to their economic situation. Many of our students are English as a second language learners who come from all over the globe. Our greatest asset is our diversity, which we celebrate as often as we are able. We are a family and care deeply about our education.

Teachers struggle daily to supplement the curriculum with relevant materials that connect the classroom to the students' lives. Life for many of our students is full of distractions, many of which challenge their ability and hinder their success. Many of my students are unaware that there is a world for them beyond their present community. Though they do come from many different backgrounds and often share their stories, it would be wonderful to provide them with positive experiences that support heritage learning while fostering intellectual curiosity. Mostly this opportunity is dampened by our schools' funding sources. Also, becoming the global society that we are, students must be able to locate the United States on a globe, and find the country of origin for a classmate from Albania, Viet Nam, Puerto Rico, or the Dominican Republic.

One of the answers to this pending problem is "placing the world in their hands." An inflatable globe can be easily transported to and from school. If I was able to give my students the world, I would, but a globe will have to do. With this globe we will be able to learn and locate each others' place of origin and become geographically aware of our world. We would also be able to locate the places where history is in the making and things "are happening."

You can rewrite the song, "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands" for each and every one of my students. They will gain a better understanding of geography and how it influences every aspect of our lives. My kids will be able to physically touch the world and even take the globe home with them to share with their families or to ponder the globe and wonder how lucky they are to have their own globe. They will touch that globe as you will have touched each of them with your kindness and generosity. Please help us to become global citizens.
