My Students

My students are digital natives, accustomed to watching videos and playing games on hand held devices. They are not as comfortable with books and written material, and for most of them this presents an obstacle to learning. A set of iPod Touches would give them access to a new method of learning.

My students come from all socioeconomic categories.

I have upper middle class students who have every advantage and will definitely attend college. I have middle class students with few advantages, but they will attend the local junior college. Then I have students who are economically disadvantaged, some don't speak English as their first language, and many of them have learning disabilities. These are the hardest students for me to reach, and yet they need it the most. They all attend a large public high school in the fastest growing district in Mississippi.

My Project

In my class, students learn content in a typical lecture setting, then they "do" the content in small group rotations. Their content mastery has really improved using this method of learning, because I am able to offer them differentiated instruction that hits every level of learning for every learner. If I had a group set of iPod Touches, I could include a rotation using that technology for each section I teach. The benefit of this rotation is that each student would get a chance to "learn" using a piece of technology that they are familiar with already. Some apps I have found for the Touch include science experiment videos, Touch flash cards, review quizzes, Brain quizzes, virtual cells, mitosis review, genetics activities, taxonomy databases and these are just the free apps! There are also several apps that will make learning easier for my disadvantaged students. The possibilities are endless, my students will love using current technology to learn important content.

This project is so important to keep my students interested in and excited about learning.

Students of this generation are digital natives, they all know how to use hand held devices. As a teacher, I want to use the best tools available to facilitate learning and make it meaningful for them. I also want to offer some new strategies for learning for those students who are struggling in the mainstream classroom. Dictation programs and translation apps will give them a new voice in our school.
