Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is located in Jackson Heights, Queens- a neighborhood in constant flux- and it is a Title I school where all students receive free lunch.
My third grade class is a general education class with many English Language Learners.
Each year the class is comprised of newcomers, students who have been in the country for years, but are still learning English and a wide range of general education students.
With the demands of rigorous academics, meeting the needs of such a varied population can pose challenging at times. However, we make sure to enhance our curriculum with many programs in the arts, movement and mindfulness. This way each student flourishes!
My Project
"Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will get you everywhere!" - Albert Einstein
Many of my students are learning English and much of the curriculum can be very challenging, but making art allows them to express themselves and level the playing field academically.
Third great is a really important year. Students are expected to perform at a high academic level no matter how long they have been in this country. When we add paint to studying a country in social studies, make foldables with construction paper in math or make an all about me poster with pastels, all the students really soar!
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
