My students need to witness science. They need to feel it, smell it, and live it through working with materials such as Wisconsin fast plants, genetic corn seeds, Daphnia, Invertebrates, & Pigeons.
Currently NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) has been introduced to our school. Although I am a complete supporter of this transition and new curriculum, it is all teacher based. Teachers need to create activities and experiences to meet all the standards. There are no books or guides, just children...waiting to learn.
My students are ready to learn.
They are competitive and want to make a name for themselves. They need the proper scientific and laboratory skills to help build a strong background for all that awaits them in the future. Hopefully giving them hands-on experiences will build their confidence and knowledge to put them above their peers and create stronger scientific minds. We need to build our future through our kids, and my students are up for the challenge.
My Project
In the NGSS life science standards for High School, the main focus is on traits of living things; Characteristics of Life. Understanding how living things maintain homeostasis, how living things play a role in ecosystems, how living things develop and change over time. What better way to study living things then to work with living things? Students will use the animals and plants from this project to make observations of these traits and apply them to inquiry based experiments. They will test how environmental changes affect living things on earth.
This project will get students interested in science!
We need more scientists and these activities will get students excited about learning and the process of scientific inquiry. It will help prepare them for college and the "real world" by requiring them to draw conclusions, evaluate, and defend claims through living organisms that they are compassionate towards.
