My students need not only to learn to solve math problems, but to have tangible items such as tangrams and fraction bars to see the value of the math they are learning.

My Students
I work in a large, diverse school which includes a large population of low income ESOL and African American students. My school is located in a very industrial area. Our school is growing quickly and I would like to give my students a variety of learning experiences.
When given a variety of hands-on and authentic learning opportunities, they develop the high ordered, critical thinking skills needed to become life long learners.
My students are eager to learn and are very enthusiastic about showing the knowledge they have learned. Given the opportunity, my students can continue to grow as students who love to learn.
My Project
Students learn new concepts on a daily basis. A lot of children need a visual representation of the math they are learning. By providing manipulatives like fraction bars and tangrams, students will be able to practice what they learn independently of the teacher. This leaves the teacher the ability to focus on small group instruction while still ensuring that the students are learning.
Third grade is when fractions, multiplication and division are introduced.
Without hands-on manipulatives, it is hard for some students to retain new concepts. All of the manipulatives selected will help the students learn the strategies that will assist in the retention of the new concepts they learn.
