My Students
Imagine a 7-year-old enthusiastically writing a brand-new version of a familiar fairy tale, a non-fiction book about a favorite animal, or a persuasive letter to the principal. The creativity is flowing - but what happens when the child wants to use a word that he or she doesn't know how to spell?
I teach second grade in an urban school in New York.
Our student population is amazingly diverse: academically, ethnically, culturally, and economically. Watching young people from such differing backgrounds come together to create a cohesive and cooperative classroom community is always an inspiration to me.
My Project
The primary use of these hand-held spelling/dictionary devices will be to facilitate my students' ability to revise and edit their own writing. When a word is entered phonetically, the correct spelling is displayed - giving the children the ability to quickly and efficiently include standard spelling in their written pieces, while not slowing down the creative process. In addition, the students will be able to use the dictionary element of the devices to increase their understanding of new vocabulary words that they encounter during their independent reading.
Using these devices will enable my students to produce written work that they can feel proud of.
It will boost their spelling strategies, increase their vocabulary, and give them a jump start on understanding the spell-check and dictionary technology that they will encounter in the future. Please consider supporting this project!
