Bright colored murals, beautiful garbs, fresh fruits and vegetables at the corner market and the smell of delicious Indian food coming from the nearby kitchen. This is the environment my students live in. Parkchester is a beautiful neighborhood that embodies the Indian culture. Unfortunately, my school is in a low-income neighborhood. Many of my students, a diverse mix of cultures too, attend a school that strives to give these eager students who are ready to learn an excellent education. Many of them are first-generation Americans and are excited to begin school!
My Project
As we get ready for the next unit, the students will be reading a lot of nonfiction. Part of their learning will include identifying nonfiction text features. The best way students learn is when they're immersed in hands-on projects. How fun would it be for my students to create their own nonfiction text features poster? I try to give my students different tools they can use when creating projects. A label maker will be an awesome tool that the students can use for this project! Using a label as their "heading/subheading" which shows the main idea of their paragraph. Or using the labels to "label" their diagrams. They can italicize or bold their labels, showing off their important vocabulary words. They can even print out a label for captions that can go under their illustrations! How exciting will they be when they have the chance to use this cool and different tool! Flair pens can also be a nice touch in their posters and especially in their illustrations or bold/italicized prints!
