Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach first grade in the inner city of New York. 80% of the students at my school are eligible for free lunch. Many come from low income families, who do not have books at home. Many of my students are English Language Learners and come from countries such as the Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Mexico and Yemen.

This year New York City is cutting the education budget once again. Classroom books will be scarce in supply, because the natural wear and tear on books reduces supplies. This year my classroom lost an entire shelf of books due to water damage from a classroom leak.

My students are eager readers. They keep books at their reading level at their desk for reading throughout the day. I also lend the children a book to read each night. For many of them, these leveled classroom library books are the only books that they have access to.

Your generosity will allow my students to improve their reading and have access to books at a level that is "just right" for them. You will make it possible for my students to borrow books to share with their family at home.
