Pushing for a New Pottery Wheel

My students need a proper pottery wheel so they can have a chance to throw pots in Ceramics class.

My Students

A pottery wheel teaches students to transform a lump of clay into a functional vessel. Ceramic pottery lasts forever. When they look at their pottery, students will always remember their time in ceramics class.

My awesome students travel from all over the city to come to our academic magnet school.

They are racially diverse. Seventy-five percent of my students live below the poverty level. My students are very smart and have bright futures. They hold so much promise. 100% of our seniors graduated last year! Over 90% go on to college. My heart swells with pride when I write this because these kids believe their education is a way to make it in the world.

My Project

I am requesting a new pottery wheel. At present, ceramics students don't have a working pottery wheel to learn throwing pots. Learning to throw is an incredible experience. Every ceramics student needs to try to learn this skill. It is not an easy task and can be humbling. For some students, it is very difficult. For others, they take to it naturally. The sense of achievement students feel when they accomplish this feat, is great. Learning to throw on a wheel is great for a student's artistic and personal development.

Until I can get a new pottery wheel for the classroom, my students continue to use hand-building techniques.

However, until students get to try out and possibly master the pottery wheel, there is a hole in our ceramics curriculum. Seeing students struggle in the beginning, practice and practice, and finally make a breakthrough, is one of those moments teachers treasure. Being able to throw on a pottery wheel is very cool to high school students, too. Please allow me to provide this opportunity!
