My Project

My students are resilient, creative, curious, funny, and hard-working 3-5 year-olds who attend Pre-K at a Washington, DC public school. Our full-time classroom is part of an elementary school in a neighborhood where most students are considered to be "at-risk", determined based on socioeconomic needs. My students have been diagnosed with autism or other communication-related disabilities. Regardless of these labels, my students consistently prove what is possible with hard work and dedication.

This year my students are OBSESSED with books that make sounds!

Over the years most of ours have been well-loved and sent several times to the "book hospital". We only have one left and students clamor over it. It is so fun to watch my students fall in love with books. They typically have a very short attention span for instructional tasks, but when the sound buttons make the book interesting to them I am able to get more practice in with skills like vocabulary and answering questions. We also frequently use hands-on visual supports to help tell stories in my classroom. The requested books and associated storytelling visuals will boost our library of favorite books for years to come!
