Pursuing National Board Certification

My Students

As an ESL teacher, I teach students who come from many different countries. What all of these students have in common is that they lack the receptive (listening and reading) and productive (speaking and writing) skills in academic English to meet their grade level standards.

As newcomers to the United States, my students face many challenges.

Learning a new language and culture while acquiring content knowledge in math, science, language arts, and social studies can be overwhelming. I strive every day to provide a warm, welcoming environment where my students feel safe and appreciated and can overcome the obstacles they are presented with and thrive in school.

I want to improve my teaching practice so that I can help my students acquire the language skills they need to be successful. My students deserve the absolute best, and that is what I want to give them by pursuing National Board Certification. Research has shown that "National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) learn more than students taught by other teachers.

My Project

National Board Certification is the gold standard in the teaching profession. Grounded in the National Board’s Five Core Propositions that describe what teachers should know and be able to do, the certification process is designed to collect standards-based evidence of accomplished practice. In all 25 certificate areas, candidates are required to complete four components. Pursuing National Board Certification will enable me to hone my practice and become the best teacher that I can be. This will have a positive impact on the English language learners that I teach.

According to numerous studies, students taught by National Board certified teachers show a two-month gain in learning when compared to those taught by teachers who are not NBCTs.

My students deserve to be taught by the most effective teacher possible. This is why I want to pursue this rigorous professional development and become an NBCT.
