My Project

Looking back at 2019, it was a big year for all of us as so much work went into preparing for the full days of kindergarten ahead – the first time in Colorado! One of my favorite ways to engage students in social situations is through purposeful play and I was ready and prepared to implement full-day purposeful play sessions. Research supports purposeful play as one way to set the tone for the day because it supports brain development, self-regulation, language skills, cognition, social competence, opportunities to explore the world safely, emotional control, symbolic and problem-solving abilities, and other emerging social skills.

The full-day kindergarten students were thriving with purposeful play, until our learning, including play, was interrupted by the pandemic.

We know that outdoor play decreased, and most young people were left without any proper playtime materials and facilitation. In my opinion, I do not think we recovered.

So, as we continue to rehabilitate from the gaps caused by pandemic-impacted learning, both opportunity, and achievement, purposeful play remains important as it is a key contributor to our children’s mood and wellbeing. This project allows me to offer age and developmentally-appropriate materials to facilitate powerful, purposeful playtime so our youngest learners are supported socially, emotionally, and mentally.
