This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students from my school come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. The majority of them are two to three grade levels behind in reading, writing, and mathematics and have struggled to catch up since middle school.

They come to my school hoping to become lawyers to make a difference in the world around them.

In essence, they want to become contributing members of society, not just functioning ones. They want to learn and need a little more support to better contenders in a competitive world.

My Project

I would love to have my students read Purple Hibiscus this year! Students are reading it in so many schools. I do not want my students to miss out on the conversations regarding the dangers of patriarchy and religious extremism around it. I am requesting 35 books and 2 study guides so that students in my classes can have a copy of the book that they can annotate and keep. Annotating, an important reading strategy that our school emphasizes really helps students' critical thinking skills. It also gives them a starting point in group discussions, a skill that was so difficult to foster online this past year.
