My Students
My students are students constantly on the move. They are children of the 48025, one of the most dangerous zip codes in Detroit. They have huge hearts and heavy experiences. Their stories will make you both laugh and cry at the same time.
My children learn by observing and doing.
They pick up their habits from their parents, their older siblings, and from the street. But the biggest impact on their lives this year will be me.
There is already a connection with many of my students. I have taught their older siblings and know the families. The class is eager to learn, every day, all day, even though they know not what tomorrow may bring. And we learn together, as one community.
My Project
The group of children I have are Detroit fourth grade urbanites, with few supplies and fewer organizational skills. Being prepared is a constant issue in this environment and can hinder student progress as instructional time can be eaten up by unprepared students.
I have established an open hands policy in my class as a result of this.
Students come in empty-handed and leave only with a full mind. I provide everything they need. The items that I have requested include all that they will need that I do not currently have, including pencils, heavy duty pencil sharpeners, and desk pouches.
Every day is a pencil sharpening nightmare, because the second best thing sharpeners do is break. And its not occasionally. It's all the time. The metal pencil sharpeners I requested will never break.
I requested the foam pads for my students with special needs. I teach in 85 minute blocks, and that can be a lot for a nine-year old with ADHD. The foam pads provide tactile comfort for my high need students so they can stay focused throughout the class period. Last year, I had a student who could not stop tapping his pencil. But when I introduced the pad to him, he calmed right down.
Desk pouches provide organization of math tools. I only requested a few because I already purchased the rest. I requested the Ticonderoga pencils because they are simply the best pencil on the market. Sharpening is always even and the longevity and quality is outstanding. A particular brand of pencil is also easy to track
