My Students
Having taught in a Title I school for the past several years, my transfer to a non-Title I school was surprising in several ways. Since my first day with my delightful 4th Grade class, it has been thrilling to discover their tremendous individuality and the diversity of their gifts and needs.
They are a fascinating blend of curiosity, kindness, passion for learning, desire to lead, and willingness to help and serve.
Interestingly these characteristics are mixed with an equally fascinating blend of anxiety, attention deficit, and other special needs, all requiring individualized nurturing and differentiated instruction.
Another surprise about my new school is that we actually have less funding for technology and other teaching resources than we did at my Title I school. How wonderful it will to link up with generous people and organizations who are willing to share resources to help educators in our quest to change the world one amazing child at a time.
My Project
My 4th Graders love being taught by puppets! 100% engagement is assured when puppets are involved. They love math with the Count, and reading with Rocky, our class mascot puppy. Imagine their excitement when they get to create their own puppets, write scripts for them, and produce their own shows.
This project will encourage reluctant writers to get their thoughts on paper and will remove barriers for shy children who don't like to speak in class.Fun is a major key to learning.
This will be so much fun, they won't even realize how much their brains are growing! Incredibly, one of my students with a stuttering disorder speaks with complete fluency when he speaks through a puppet. Puppets remove social and intellectual barriers.
