My Project
For years I have been utilizing partner plays and short scripts to help my students practice reading with one another as well as to learn how to give different characters different voices. Students get so excited, not only to work with one another, but to then get to perform or read their script in front of others. Because this activity is so much fun, students usually don't even realize that they are also gaining practice with their reading skills.
Once students are comfortable with reading scripts they move on to writing their own and becoming playwrights!
I often give my students open ended prompts and they work with a partner to create a story by trading their script back and forth. I would love to add another element to these activities by providing puppets for students to use as they act out their scripts. It is an enormous opportunity for them to develop creativity and also provides an avenue for shyer students to "speak through the puppet" before they are reading to speak for themselves in front of the group. I work at a diverse public school in Detroit so having a wide variety of high quality puppets so that every student can see themselves within scripts (and imagine themselves in different roles!) is important. I know that this will further inspire a new crop of writers and performers within my classroom.
