Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students love to use our new classroom computer that was was donated last year. They publish their poems, reports, stories, and letters using the computer. Their faces light up when they see their printed writing. The only obstacle we face is that we rarely have paper to use for printing.
My twenty enthusiastic first graders attend a K-8 school located in a high-poverty area in New York City.
Many of them live in temporary housing shelters. They really enjoy coming to school everyday and learning new things. They are energetic and full of life.
My Project
It is my goal as a teacher to inspire my students to become lifelong readers and writers. I use my classroom computer as a motivational tool for writing. After they write a story, poem, letter or report, they are able to type it on the classroom computer, add pictures, and print it out. After publishing, they sit in the author's chair and share their writing with the class. This is a great way for them to express themselves and become proficient readers and writers.
Most of my students do not have access to a computer at home.
Having a class computer has taught my students how to do find information and learn about countless topics. Using it for their writing is a tremendous asset to my writing curriculum. However, not having paper to allow them to print their stories has been quite troublesome.
