My Students

Our school is a high-achieving, low-income school. We have won numerous state and national awards for our students' high performance, in spite of the many challenges they bring with them to school every day. My classroom is comprised of ELL students, students with disabilities, gifted students, and students from a wide range of socio-economic statuses.

My students are quite possibly some of the hardest working students you are likely to find anywhere.

My students arrive every day ready to work together to reach the high expectations that are set in my classroom and at our school. In fact, my students have gone so far as to sign a contract stating that they will arrive an hour earlier to school for extra instruction, as part of our choice Academy program. Our staff has a focused and defined commitment to ensuring that ALL students reach their fullest academic potential.

My Project

A class set of Sphero SPRK+ programmable robots will allow me to introduce a plethora of 21st century skills to my 4th graders. They will not only learn to code these robots, a skill many experts believe is becoming a necessity for anyone in our future workforce, but will also learn to work collaboratively and creatively. Because this set comes with 12 robots, my students will be working in groups of 2-3 when using the robots. This will foster the essential skills of collaborative thinking and group problem solving, skills that are just as important as the curricular areas. Exposure to these skills is so incredibly important, particularly when working at a Title-I school, where many of our students do not have home access to tools such as programmable robots.

A set of programmable robots will allow me to teach computer science skills in conjuction with many other areas of the curriculum, from math to art.

Sphero provides teachers support through access to various lessons that incorporate the robots into a wide range of curricular areas. For example, Sphero robots can be used when teaching angles in math. They can also be used to record data for students to analyze. They can be programmed, dipped in paint, and used to create a masterpiece. All of this while using a tool that a vast majority of 10 year olds will find incredibly fun and engaging. A class set of Sphero robots will allow me to effectively and efficiently teach such a wide range of skills imperative to our 21st century students!
