Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are as diverse as New York City, in race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation and ability. Our school demographics are 62% Hispanic, 28% Black, 5% Asian, and 3% White, with 85% of students receiving free or reduced lunches. My students come to school every day from all five boroughs with various needs, persevering against all the challenges life has thrown at them.

I have students who come to school with so little - students coming to school without breakfast, and without backpacks.

Some cannot live at home with their parents, and some do not even have a place to call home. Our students deal with many challenges, including mental health issues, domestic violence, and pregnancies. Often, it is a staff member who is there for a student no matter the situation, whether it is showing up to a basketball game, bringing flowers to a performance, or providing a collared shirt before an interview.

My Project

"But Miss, how does this relate to real life?" It's the question I most often get asked as a science teacher - strange vocabulary and understanding reactions seems out of touch from the everyday lives that my students know. That is why I want to show them that science is all around them. To do this, my students are going to explore the connections between science, exercise, and health by looking at body systems and the effects different exercises have on the human body.

To do this, my students need exercise equipment and monitors to collect data regarding their physical health in relation to the respiratory and circulatory systems.

This will allow my students to not only to understand how their health and physical condition changes, but will also allow them to design and implement their own scientific experiments looking at exercise and health. Through creating and exploring different scenarios, my students will be able to learn about the scientific process, create experiments, and collect data. They will also be able to see how science intersects with "real life" and make connections between life inside and outside of the classroom. My other hope is that students will be able to get exercise while we create these scientific experiments, and understand the health benefits of exercise.
