This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are a diverse community of learners ranging from non-English speakers to native English speakers. A large majority of my students come from the China-town borough of Philadelphia, and for some, this is their first time in the United States learning! Those who aren't from China-town, are from the surrounding South Philadelphia area, and we also have a couple of homeless shelters in our catchment, which students often live at as well. My students get to learn in an inclusive and welcoming environment with a great parent support group.
My Project
As we build our "gym within the gym", I'm continuing to try and find more ways for the students to build confidence in their bodies, and if you've ever done a pull up, you'd know what a difficult physical feat it is!
Giving our students a good set of bars will encourage their love of fitness even more - along with assisted pull up band to help them learn form correctly if they aren't at a place to do a full pull up just yet.
We have currently two pull up bars in the gym - They are wrapped in old tape, too close to the wall, and mounted too low to the ground - and I can't keep the students off of them!
Besides the traditional pull-up, there are butterfly pull ups, chest to bar pull ups, muscle ups, kipping pull ups, as well as other types. Beyond pull-ups, the students can mount our previously funded gym rings to the bars for additional exercises.
