Every year it is hard to say goodbye to a group of students, and then every year I am absolutely blown away by my new students! Part of student engagement and learning really has to do with relationships and establishing connections with the students. I say this every year, but nonetheless, my students this year are exceptionally near and dear to my heart! It is so wonderful to see classrooms filled with students!
Trust between teachers and students is the glue that holds the classroom together.
Without trust, students will not be willing to take chances and step outside of their comfort zones. It is important to me to build trust with students and make them feel seen, heard and valued. This, to me, is what it's all about; establishing trust that will plant seeds of confidence and courage!
My Project
If I have learned anything in my sixth year teaching middle school, it is that students love to feel like they have a VOICE and a CHOICE! With adding some new, flexible seating to the classroom, it will allow students another seating option to explore!
Flexible seating has many benefits which include but are not limited to: choice for students, physical health, comfort, community, connectivity, equity and collaboration!
We often work collaboratively in pairs and small groups, therefore integrating flexible seating will allow collaboration to be more accessible and comfortable for students. It is my hope that adding flexible seating in the classroom will also instill an excitement for students to grab a stool, find a partner and enjoy their cooperative learning time!
