This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is in the Kensington neighborhood of North Philadelphia, PA. We are a pre-K to 8th grade public elementary school with a large population of English Language Learners.
WM Elementary has 20 beginning English Language Learners (from Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala and Yemen) in grades 4-8 who receive support in a small group setting.
We focus on listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. One of our favorite activities is to publish and display our written work.
My Project
M's English Language Learners (ELL's) enjoy using "word banks" to write stories and plays. We would like to publish, print and display this work. Currently, the ELL students in grades 4-8 only have access to one computer.
We would like to open a "Publishing Center." We will be able to publish and display student work more quickly with the additional Chromebook computers that this project is requesting.
Some of our recent writing projects have included a sneaker commercial, penguin facts, and describing an annual ice sculpture festival in China. When we publish our work, we can take copies home to share with our families and create hallway displays. Having additional computers in our classroom will help us to build our editing and publishing skills.
