Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach a 6th-12th Community-Based Instruction program for students with moderate to severe needs in a school that serves approximately ninety percent, Latino students. The program serves students with autism, health impairments, and intellectual disability. In addition to barriers due to their disabilities, many of my students also encounter barriers resulting from language development and socioeconomic status. My students are working toward gaining and improving life skills, vocational skills, and functional academics.
Our program is designed to provide students with meaningful and engaging hands-on learning experiences that will help them obtain functional academic skills, and the skills necessary for transitions to adulthood.
I am very excited to see the program grow every year. Although this is a very exciting experience, it is also a challenging one. I need to ensure that I meet all of my students' needs; for some, it means being equipped with functional skills to be independent young adults.
My Project
My students are excited to learn and improve their technology skills from typing assignments to creating digital posters that demonstrate their understanding of the new content. My students are performing several grades bellow grade level and on alternate curriculum. Learning virtually for over a year was challenging in more than one way, but it opened our eyes to different skills we were not considering prior to virtual learning, such as computer literacy. Now that we are back to in-person instruction, my students are excited to learn how to use technology to showcase their learning.
With the Epson Eco Tank ET-4760 All-in-One Supertank Printer, my students will be able to print and showcase their learning with the rest of the school.
They are working on developing and strengthening their writing, making the revision, editing, and publishing process easier. Being able to print their final drafts motivates them to continue writing and makes the publishing official.
