Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
When you're 4 years old, there are many 'firsts'. First day of school, first time writing your name, first try at learning the letters of the alphabet, and first story printed and published. Really? I believe it should be. While we're at it, let's preserve some of their other precious milestones.
I have 2 classes of 18 4-year-old's motivated to learn about everything!
They are enrolled in the School Readiness Language Development Program (SRLDP). Primarily English language learners who qualify for free lunch, the goal of this program, unique to LAUSD, is language development. Students receive instruction in their primary language, Spanish, as well as English language development.
Written language is a significant component of our Pre-Kindergarten curriculum. Many of these children have little or no experience holding a pencil and very few know how to write their name. It's hard for adults to recall how complicated it is: recognizing your written name, holding the pencil properly, coordinating hand & eyes, controlling the fine finger muscles, forming the letters, keeping them in order, etc.!! That's what makes this such an exciting time! There's so much to learn and my young students are ready to get started, but they want to share their triumphs--the sooner, the better!
My Project
In Pre-K, performance-based assessments are a primary method for tracking development. Each month, students complete a self-portrait with an 'artist's signature' -- their name. The portrait portfolios are on display all year, providing a month-by-month chronology of each child's progress. My students do amazing things every day, but this is one venue where their accomplishments really stand out. How do I explain to the beaming child, who just wrote his name for the first time in November, that he can't take it home until June? They also dictate some fascinating stories to narrate paintings & drawings. I'd like to type & 'publish' some for occasions like Christmas & Mother's Day. A basic printer/copier will serve both purposes. A laminating machine would preserve the precious projects the children create. Some have parents employed out of state and most have grandparents living in other countries. They'd love to send a memento that would survive the mail & stand the test of time.
I believe celebrating success encourages students to succeed.
The accomplishment of writing your name for the first time is worthy of bragging rights. What better way to share the great news than to take home a laminated copy of your achievement? A Mother's Day painting accompanied by 'My mom is special because . . .' printed on some lovely paper will be a cherished keepsake. My hope is that by honoring these 'firsts', my students will be motivated towards 'seconds', 'thirds', and so on.
